How
should I respond to the Gospel? I must repent of my sins and
trust in Christ.
The Gospel message demands
a response. Just knowing the facts of the Gospel does not
mean that a person is saved. You must make a personal decision
regarding the facts.
Salvation
occurs when a person repents of his sin and believes in the
person and work of Christ.
"For God
so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life." (John 3:16)
"The time
is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent
ye, and believe the gospel." (Mark 1:15)
"Testifying
both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward
God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ." (Acts
20:21)
"And the
times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth
all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed
a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness
by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath givene
assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from
the dead." (Acts 17:30-31)
Repentance
is turning away from and rejecting sin and turning to God.
It is being sorry for sin and wanting to be forgiven.
"For they
themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had
unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the
living and true God." (1 Thessalonians 1:9)
"But shewed
first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout
all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that
they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for
repentance." (Acts 26:20)
Faith is
trusting in Christ to forgive you. It is a trust in and commitment
to Him. It is trusting Christ alone to be saved. Belief consists
of knowledge, assent, and wholehearted trust.
"He that
believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that
believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath
of God abideth on him." (John 3:36)
"Verily,
verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth
on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not
come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."
(John 5:24)
"For by
grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should
boast." (Ephesians 5:8-9)
"But after
that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man
appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done,
but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of
regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed
on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That
being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according
to the hope of eternal life." (Titus 3:4-7)
Today is
the day of salvation. Repent and believe!
"Go to now,
ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a
city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get
gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For
what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for
a little time, and then vanisheth away." (James 3:13-14)
“Behold,
now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
(2 Corinthians 6:2)
“As for
man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so
he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is
gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.”
(Psalm 103: 15-16)
"Therefore
we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which
we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every
transgression and disobedience received a just recompence
of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;
which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was
confirmed unto us by them that heard him;" (Hebrews
2:1-3)
